The Supreme Court on Monday announced new assignments of the Justices for handling emergency and other in-chambers matters from the federal Circuits. Following tradition, the new Chief Justice, John G. Roberts, Jr., was assigned to the D.C. Circuit and the Fourth Circuit. He also was assigned the Federal Circuit.
The assignments were made to replace the temporary list issued on Sept. 7, after Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died.
Here are the other Circuit assignments under the new array:
First, Justice David H. Souter
Second, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Third, Justice Souter
Fifth, Justice Antonin Scalia
Sixth, Justice John Paul Stevens
Seventh, Justice Stevens
Eighth, Justice Clarence Thomas
Ninth, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor
Tenth, Justice Stephen G. Breyer
Eleventh, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy
A new assignment list will be issued if Justice O’Connor’s retirement becomes effective and she is replaced.
