Monday round-up

Briefly:

  • On Friday, lawyers for California’s inmates urged the Court not to delay an order requiring the state to reduce dangerous overcrowding in its prisons; this mandate was the result of the Court’s 2011 decision in Brown v. PlataLyle Denniston of this blog and Kent Scheidegger of Crime and Consequences have coverage.
  • As Conor reported in Friday’s round-up, retired Justice John Paul Stevens criticized the decision in Shelby County v. Holder in his review of Bending Toward Justice: The Voting Rights Act and the Transformation of American Democracy, a new book by Gary May, in The New York Review of Books. At The Atlantic, Andrew Cohen summarizes and praises what he describes as the Justice’s “memorable essay.”
  • This blog‘s Lyle Denniston and UPI’s Michael Kirkland cover recent developments in the legal challenge to the contraception coverage provisions of the Affordable Care Act, a dispute that many believe will ultimately reach the Court.
