Announcement of opinions for Thursday, June 6 (complete)

We live blogged as the court released three opinions in argued cases from the current term.

  • In Truck Insurance Exchange v. Kaiser Gypsum Co. the court held that an insurer with responsibility for a bankruptcy claim is a “party in interest” that can object to a plan of reorganization under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code.
  • The court unanimously ruled in Connelly v. United States that a closely held corporation’s contractual obligation to redeem shares is not necessarily a liability that reduces a corporation’s value for purposes of the federal estate tax.
  • The court ruled 5-4 in Becerra v. San Carlos Apache Tribe that the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, which allows an Indian tribe to enter into contracts with the Indian Health Service to assume responsibility for administering the health care programs that the IHS would otherwise operate, does requires the IHS to pay contract support costs.
