Wednesday round-up

The Supreme Court — and President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett — were the subject of the first segment of Tuesday night’s chaotic presidential debate. Trump reiterated his pledge to fill the court’s vacancy before Election Day, while Democrat Joe Biden said the seat should not be filled until after Americans express their views in the election. USA Today’s Richard Wolf recounts the debate segment.
Extensive coverage of Barrett’s nomination continues. Briefly:
- In The Wall Street Journal, Kate Bachelder Odell argues that Barrett sets an example for working mothers.
- Mark Walsh of Education Week examines Barrett’s 2016 comments about Title IX and transgender students. Walsh also analyzes Barrett’s education-related rulings on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit.
- In an episode of The World & Everything in It podcast, Mary Reichard interviews John Malcolm of the Heritage Foundation on Barrett’s jurisprudence.
- E&E News offers three articles on Barrett’s environmental record: Pamela King looks at Barrett’s role in a Clean Water Act case as well as her views on standing and what they mean for environmentalists, and Jennifer Hijazi and Niina Farah explore how Barrett could help cement the Trump administration’s energy rules.
- Mike Berry writes in Newsweek that Trump’s nomination of Barrett “has set in motion a conservative resurgence on the high court.”
- Kelly Shackelford writes for Fox News that Barrett’s judicial opinions “have favorably strengthened the critical civil rights of American citizens, including religious liberty, while also serving as a critical check on a burgeoning administrative state.”
- Bill Blum argues for AlterNet that Barrett’s confirmation would be “horrendous” and offers five potential consequences if she were to join the court.
- At the Crime & Consequences blog, Kent Scheidegger discusses Barrett’s views on the death penalty and whether she would recuse herself from capital cases.
