Justice Clarence Thomas, who turns 71 this year, dismissed talk of his retirement from the Supreme Court during an appearance at Pepperdine University School of Law’s Annual Dinner on March 30. “I’m not retiring,” he declared in response to a question about his hypothetical retirement party years down the line. “You’re not going to argue with me,” the moderator, incoming Pepperdine University president James A. Gash, joked. “I know, but I’m not retiring,” Thomas reiterated.
“Twenty years?”
“No.”
“… Thirty years?”
“No.”

On April 4, Thomas hosted the Inaugural Reception and Ceremony for the Horatio Alger Association at the Supreme Court, presenting new members of the association with the Horatio Alger Medallion.
Justice Neil Gorsuch spoke at the Federal Bar Association Civics Essay Award Reception on March 22. The following week, he participated in a conversation with Judge Douglas Ginsburg of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit at George Mason University’s Global Antitrust Institute.
While Thomas and Gorsuch were presenting awards, Justice Stephen Breyer took home several honors this past month, picking up the 2019 Manley O. Hudson Medal at the American Society of International Law’s 113th Annual Meeting on March 28 for his contributions to scholarship and achievement in international law. Breyer received the Scribes Lifetime-Achievement Award from the American Society of Legal Writers on April 12.
Breyer also discussed comparative constitutional approaches to civil liberties at a Cardozo Law conference on March 31 (covered here by Cardozo News), and spoke at a University of Oxford alumni event in Washington, D.C., on April 13. Breyer then took part in Talk of the Hill on April 22, held at the Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital. The Hill Center blog covered the event.
Justice Samuel Alito adjudicated the final round of Fordham Law’s Irving R. Kaufman Memorial Securities Law Moot Court on March 31. Two weeks later, Alito and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy made a joint appearance at Duke Law School. There, the Bolch Judicial Institute presented Kennedy with the inaugural Bolch Prize for the Rule of Law.
