Resistance to televising the Court

Two Justices of the Supreme Court made it clear to a House subcommittee on Tuesday that there remains considerable resistance on the Court to the idea of televising its public sessions, including oral arguments. Justices Anthony M. Kennedy and Clarence Thomas commented on the issue in a budget hearing before a House Approproations panel.

The Senate Judiciary Committee last week approved for Senate consideration a bill that would compel the Court to open its public proceedings to television coverage. That measure is discussed on this blog here.

Press coverage of the Kennedy-Thomas testimony is provided by Linda Greenhouse of the New York Times here, by Tony Mauro of Legal Times here, and by Gina Holland of the Associated Press here.

Justice Kennedy’s opening statement, summarizing the Court’s budget requests, can be found here.
