Leading Upcoming Petitions

The next Conference of the Justices — when they will consider a new batch of cert. petitions — is February 18. Orders will be released on Tuesday, February 22 (the 21st is the Presidents Day Holiday). Cases granted from this Conference will be argued next term.

Here are the highest profile petitions (although not necessarily – in the instance of the Williams case – most certworthy ones) on the February 18 conference:

No. 04-623, Ashcroft v. Oregon – this is the assisted suicide case

Nos. 04-805 & 04-814, Texaco and Shell Oil v. Dagher – this is an antitrust joint ventures case that has generated enormous interest in the business community

No. 04-849, Williams v. Attorney General – this petition challenges the state’s ban on sex toy sales
